  6. Week 1 Task 1-
    • Complete Assignment 1- You will find in the organisations called Investing Money, a page on Simple Interest for Investment.  This web page includes examples and other links to help you complete this assignment.  This assignment is to be hand written, scanned and emailed to teacher or done on the computer and emailed.
    • Think about project, think of an idea and each person to post an idea in the Class forum called Project Ideas.
    • Write about this lesson, the first assignment and the project in your Personal Blog.

Task 1

 

  1. Complete Assignment 1- You will find in the organisations called Investing Money, a page on Simple Interest for Investment This assignment is to be hand written, scanned and emailed to teacher or done on the computer. The primary source for solving these problems is a web page in the organisations called Investing Money, a page on Simple Interest for Investment with worked examples.  Other links also provided.
  2. Think about project, think of an idea and each person to post an idea in the Class forum called Project Ideas.

Lesson 2

 

  1. Pre-recorded demonstration on creating spreadsheet on Simple Interest for Investment.
  2. Activity- Create your own spreadsheet on a similar example with slightly different interest rate
  3. Demonstration on repeated simple interest i.e. Compound Interest.
  4. Discussion on difference between simple and compound Interest.  Which is better?
  5. Activity- Group discussion (in group chat rooms, timed) to developing a formula for Compound Interest and report back to class.
  6. Define the Compound Interest Formula.
  7. Task 2 discussion including progress and activity on the Project.

Task 2

 

  1. Complete Assignment 2 easy questions and harder questions (optional). Hand written, scanned and emailed to teacher.  The primary source for solving these problems is a web page on Compound Interest on Investments with worked examples.  Other links also provided.
  2. Read through everyone’s ideas for project.  Are any the same or similar or do they have any overlap? Decide on two you ideas would be interested in working on. Post your reflections on the Class discussion Forum.  Make one or more constructive comments to other people.

Lesson 3

Note: Teacher needs to decide on groups (2-3 people) for report on Investment before lesson starts.

 

  1. Download a spreadsheet template on Compound Interest.
  2. Individual Activity- Use a prepared template to investigate Compound Interest investments with the time periods is varied.
  3. Discussion on what happens when the time frames are changed.  What are the best time periods for compounding interest?
  4. Discuss Task 3.  Students assigned to groups for Group Report: Investment.
  5. Discuss Project and start to formulate groups for the Project.

Task 3

 

  1. Participation in Group Discussion Forum about the Investment Report
  2. Contributions to Group Wiki- Investment Report.
  3. Individual work to read about simple Interest for loans and repayments.
  4. Complete Assignment 3. Hand written, scanned and emailed to teacher. Note this will be too much for task 3
  5. Participate in Class discussion Forum and try to decide on groups for Project work (3-4 students in each group).

·        Group discussion about Investment report,

·        Group Report: Investment (Task 3)  Wiki due in 12-24 hours before the next lesson. 

·        Class discussion Forum about the formation of groups and “issues” for the project.

Lesson 4

Teacher should have read reports before lesson starts Resources needed for this lesson include a prepared Spreadsheet for a reducible rate House Loan.

Task 4

  1. Use a Spreadsheet template to solve problems related to borrowing money on a simple and compound interest rates. Assignment 3 Time variation is included in Assignment 3
  2. Begin research on Group Project and begin to define Roles.

·        Begin to accumulate resources for the project and formulate Hypotheses on your solution.

Lesson 5-

  1. Introduce the Concept of Depreciation
  2. Discuss how a simple interest spreadsheet could be modified for use in calculating Depreciation
  3. Project Discussion:  Environmental Economics- Profitable lifestyle changes or Incentives for families or Business
  4.  Discuss Task 5- Group Report: Loans & Depreciation

Lesson 6

This lesson will consist of a synchronous chat room for each group to last for 30 minutes (min) to one hour (max).  The teacher will drop in to each group to answer any questions that may arise or to just observe.

Task 6

1.      Students are to review feedback from the previous five Tasks and to independently do the progress self-test in preparation for the Summative Test to follow.  Email Teacher if can’t resolve problem by themselves.

2.      Group Project- Working in the group wiki to present the problem, information about the problem and the solution with supporting documentation i.e. narrative and spreadsheet to analyse the economics.

Lesson 7

  1. Optional - Depending on the progress and needs of the students the teacher can provide another lesson for synchronous class/group chats like the previous lesson. This will also be determined by time limitations.
  2. Summative Test on Investment and Borrowing.
  3. Optional – Face-to-face meeting to present Group projects to each-other.
